Setting up a blog is no easy task. There are a number of decisions to make, from what domain name to choose to who will be responsible for your hosting, right? And let’s be honest, those decisions are way more important than a workspace…. Wait! Are they? I used to think so, forgetting that there are other essentials that can make blogging easier.
Workspace! It’s not something that I planned ahead. I worked off my laptop from the comfort of my bed or couch, and sometimes even on the floor. A few months in and I began to understand that having a dedicated work space was a need.
So, I started searching for a desk options, found a cozy-chic chair, invested on a desktop, added some decorations and it slowly came together. So, if you’re thinking about investing on a dedicated workspace, this is what I recommend.
Desk
Get a nice sized desk with enough room for you. My desk is not huge but it is functional. It has enough space for my Mac, mouse, keyboard, but most importantly for me to spread out my notebook and hand write notes and ideas. Then from time to time it also holds lots of toys that my little piles on it, like pretend cupcakes and tea cups – she loves feeding me. 🙂
Seating
Get a comfortable but stylish chair. I wanted a chair that was comfortable but also chic – it needed to have a decorative element. I found one that has trim nail head details, which I love. Then, I added a pillow for back support but it also add a decorative touch.
Planning tools
Get chic planning tools. While I don’t have an agenda, I have all appointments and reminders electronically, I do have a notebook. I found one with the cutest motivational quote, “She believed she could, so she did. I’m huge on pep talks and motivational quotes are great reminders to stay focused and keep pushing – at least for me.
Décor
Find functional decorative items. Although, my chair and pillow are somewhat decorative, I didn’t stop there. I got this little octopus – my spirit animal – which is such a cute detail on my desk. I also have my photo books which have the cutest trim and bring so much color to my workspace. A framed stock card quote that came on with my last Kate Spade purchase. I’m all about multi-purposing and it was way too cute to toss. Finally, fresh flowers. About once or twice a month I come back from the grocery store with a small ($5) bouquet of flowers for my desk. I just love having these.
Storage
You can have pretty storage options. My desk came with two drawers, but I opted to only add one. For extra storage I have a decorative box – see the multi-purposing theme? The box is colorful and it also gives me room store blog related papers.
I have a few more wants, maybe some wall art above my desk and a pretty rug for under my feet… just to name a few. I will work on these updates and share them with you.
But now, I want to ask, do you have a workspace? What is your favorite item if you had to choose one? Mine is between the Octopus & fresh flowers.
I love your space! I’ve been lucky enough that the little office I used to use for schoolwork works perfectly well as a blogging space, with some updated (read: ANY) decor. I have a black and gold color theme, and a girlfriend got me a little plaque that says “Girlboss” for Christmas — such a perfect finishing touch!
My goal is to set up my workspace this week. Currently my stuff is thrown all over the house.
I need to add flowers to my work area. that would make me so happy. I love your chair too!
I just did this with my office and finally, stop using the kitchen countertop!! Like the octopus!
Your space is lovely and inspiring me to get mine put together and streamlined!
A workspace is so important for productivity and focus! I have an office with a library for when I work from home, work on photos, or blog. My decor is just potted plants right now though. Your octopus figurine is cute!
I love the set up, especially how pretty your storage looks! I have a desk but never use it, I should more often it’s so nice to have one!
your work space is lovely! I recently upgraded my desk and I could not be happier. It really helps to have it decorated and cozy since it seems we spend so much time here.
I love your space. Come and do mine! I am functional but not pretty.
I really love your work place especially the flowers on the other side, while my work place is a totally mess .
I think it’s really lovely to have a workspace especially if you do all your work at home. Simply working on the bed, the couch or wherever won’t help you focus and finish work. I love how your workspace looks!
I’d like to start by saying that I have the same desk! I love the simplicity of your work space and think that it’s incredibly important to have that, especially as writers.
Love your octopus! But fresh flowers win, because I love, love fresh flowers. My desk recently started falling apart and that is super frustrating. But hopefully I can get it back together. A fresh space is so important.
I have a very comfortable and functional chair but not one that I will fall asleep in. Other than that it is all the way I need it and I can work most of the day, but a good chair is key.
I don’t think I’m alone in saying, “You should see my work area! It’s controlled chaos!” Your space is lovely and well organized. Mine? Not so much!
You are so right about having a dedicated space to work. I’ve had that for many years and it just works out so well. I can get away from all that stuff behind the door. Great post.
I like your setup. I have zero decor on my desk, as it’s totally taken over with papers, receipts, and clutter. I try and clean it off every weekend to start fresh, and by Friday it’s a mess again. I need a new system for papers, etc.
